Manny Machado drove in his first game-winning run as a Padre on Sunday afternoon as host San Diego took advantage of a strategic misfire by San Francisco to win 3-1.

Hunter Renfroe scored in the bottom of the seventh on Machado's bases-loaded, one-out fielder's choice to break a 1-1 tie and give the Padres their third win in their season-opening four-game series against the Giants.

With the game tied 1-1, Austin Hedges opened the bottom of the seventh with a single off San Francisco reliever Nick Vincent, but was forced at second on Renfroe's grounder to second baseman Joe Panik. Greg Garcia followed with a double inside the third-base bag to put Padres at second and third with one out.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy then intentionally walked Eric Hosmer, who had tied the game on his previous at-bat with an RBI single, to load the bases with Machado coming to the plate. Bochy also called in Sam Dyson to face Machado, who was off to a 3-for-14 start for the Padres.

Machado bounced a slow roller to shortstop Brandon Crawford on Dyson's first pitch. Crawford tossed to Panik to force Hosmer at second, but Machado beat the relay as Renfroe scored the go-ahead run.

The Padres added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth off Dyson as Wil Myers scored on Hedges' single to left. The Padres catcher was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In his major league debut, Padres starter Chris Paddack dueled with San Francisco starter Jeff Samardzija, with both pitchers giving up a run in the fifth.

Paddack retired the first 10 Giants he faced before walking Panik with one out in the fourth. Crawford singled with one out in the fifth and scored from first on Pablo Sandoval's double over the head of Padres center fielder Manuel Margot.

Paddack gave up the one run on two hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in five innings. Samardzija gave up an unearned run on three hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

The Padres tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a walk to pinch-hitter Franchy Cordero, who moved to second on a throwing error by Sandoval and scored on Hosmer's single. Sandoval's second error of the game in the eighth led to the second unearned run scored by the Padres.

Adam Warren (1-0) got the win with two hitless innings of relief. Kirby Yates got his third save of the season.
