J.D. Martinez hit two homers and drove in a career-high seven runs, and Eduardo Rodriguez blanked the Padres on five hits over seven innings Friday night as the visiting Boston Red Sox routed San Diego 11-0.
Rodriguez (15-5) entered the game with the highest run-support average in the major leagues at 7.85 runs per game. The Red Sox scored three runs in each of the first two innings, one in the fourth and four in the sixth.
Martinez hit a three-run homer in the first off Padres starter Chris Paddack, a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a three-run homer in the sixth off Eric Yardley. He finished the night 3-for-4.
He was far from the only Boston batter who feasted on Padres pitching in a 14-hit assault. The Padres also committed two errors.
Rafael Devers was 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and three runs. Xander Bogaerts went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Mookie Betts was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs.
Rodriguez ran his scoreless streak to 17 1/3 innings. He issued one walk while striking out six. The left-hander threw only 93 pitches with the Red Sox turning four double plays during his stint. Right-handed reliever Josh A. Smith worked the final two innings to complete a five-hit shutout.
Betts opened the game with a double and moved to third on a single by Bogaerts. One out later, Martinez went deep to left-center.
Mitch Moreland drew a walk to open the second and advanced to second on a single by Brock Holt. After a sacrifice bunt by Rodriguez, Moreland scored on a sacrifice fly by Betts. Devers and Bogarts followed with back-to-back RBI doubles.
Martinez's 30th homer of the season, a three-run shot, followed a run-scoring single from Bogaerts to cap the sixth.
Paddack had the shortest outing of his 22 career starts -- giving up six runs on seven hits and a walk in just 2 1/3 innings. The rookie is 0-2 with a 10.06 ERA in his past four starts.
