Sean Manaea limited the visiting Chicago White Sox to one run in seven innings as the Oakland Athletics won a second consecutive game against the American League Central leaders, 3-1 on Thursday afternoon.

An errant pickoff throw broke a third-inning tie, handing the decisive run to the A's.

The win helped the Athletics (76-64) in both their postseason pursuits. It allowed them to pull within 5 1/2 games of the idle first-place Houston Astros in the AL West and three games of the idle AL wild-card-leading Boston Red Sox.

Manaea (9-9) won for the first time since July 28, striking out nine. He allowed five hits and one walk.

After the A's scored in the second inning and the White Sox drew even in the top of the third, Oakland took the lead for good in the bottom of the third.

Starling Marte singled and stole second, his 44th theft of the season. Following a Matt Olson walk, White Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez (3-2) tried to pick Marte off second but threw wildly into center field, allowing Marte to come all the way around to score while Olson took third.

Matt Chapman's sacrifice fly, a ball caught in foul territory by Chicago left fielder Billy Hamilton, scored Olson with the inning's second run, giving Oakland a 3-1 lead.

There was no further scoring in the game, with Sergio Romo taking over for Manaea and throwing a one-hit eighth before Andrew Chafin worked around a two-out double by Romy Gonzalez in the ninth for his third save.

Lopez was pulled after five innings, charged with three runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits. He walked three and struck out two.

Tony Kemp tripled one out after Jed Lowrie had doubled for Oakland's first run.

The lone White Sox run was the product of a Cesar Hernandez double and a Jose Abreu RBI single.

Marte finished with two hits for the A's, who went 3-4 in the season series with the White Sox.

Abreu and Luis Robert had two hits each for Chicago (80-60), which went the entire series without hitting a home run.
