Frans Nielsen scored in the shootout as the Detroit Red Wings completed a comeback for a 4-3 victory against the host Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Detroit's Anthony Mantha scored twice in a three-minute span of the third period.

Andreas Athanasiou gave the Red Wings a lead with a first-period goal.

Detroit goalie Jonathan Bernier stopped 49 shots, without facing a shot during the overtime session. The Red Wings, who've won six of their last seven games, improved to 2-1 in shootouts as Nielsen was the only player for either team to convert on the penalty shots.

Brock McGinn, Micheal Ferland and Dougie Hamilton scored for the Hurricanes, who won in their only previous shootout this season. Carolina's Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen each notched two assists.

Carolina goalie Scott Darling, who secured his first victory of the season two nights earlier at Chicago, made 29 saves, including four in overtime.

Darling was in his fourth game of the season after an injury in the last preseason game caused him to miss time when the regular season began.

Fresh out of the penalty box, Mantha scored with 13:56 to play in regulation to close the gap to 3-2 before his tying goal.

The Hurricanes, who were in the opener of a six-game homestand, held a 52-28 edge in shots through regulation. They've been outshot only once this season.

Athanasiou scored when the Red Wings controlled the puck off a face-off and the Carolina defense didn't shift into position in time.

McGinn's tying goal with 3:20 to play in the opening period. He collected the puck off a rebound and his shot when through the legs of Detroit defenseman Danny Dekeyser, who had his back turned to McGinn.

Haydn Fleury and Phil Di Giuseppe each notched their first assists of the season on the goal.

Ferland's go-ahead power-play goal in the second period gave him a team-high eight goals this season.

Hamilton's goal came with 2:59 to play in the second period as he was in the right spot to convert on a rebound.

The Red Wings, despite playing in overtime a night earlier, came with more energy in the opening period. They tapered off in the second period, when Carolina produced a 19-7 edge in shots.

Detroit won a meeting last month by 3-1 at home.
