Patrice Bergeron scored short-handed during a three-goal barrage in the second period as the Boston Bruins finally overcame the visiting Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Charlie McAvoy, Charlie Coyle and David Pastrnak also scored, and Brad Marchand had two assists as the Bruins won for the eighth time in their last nine games. Tuukka Rask stopped 25 shots and improved to 14-0-6 at home.

Darren Helm scored for the Red Wings, who have dropped 13 of 15 (2-12-1). Jonathan Bernier made 37 saves.

Boston entered Saturday leading the NHL with 82 points, but cellar-dwelling Detroit (32 points) had been responsible for two of the Bruins' 11 regulation losses. The Red Wings had won five straight in the series.

The first period was all Bruins, though the Red Wings led 1-0 after Helm tucked the rebound of his initial shot past Rask on the shorthand at 3:12.

Boston held an 18-6 edge in shots at period's end -- nearly more than Detroit had all game (20) when the teams met in a 3-1 Red Wings win last Sunday.

The Bruins kept up the pressure in the second period until McAvoy broke through at 8:01. On a three-on-two up ice, McAvoy was left unattended in the slot for his second goal of the season. From there, the flood gates opened for Boston, despite a David Krejci hooking penalty 24 seconds later.

During a Red Wings line change on the power play, Marchand wrested the puck away from Mike Green near the boards to find an open Bergeron in the middle for the short-handed goal at 9:40.

Coyle made it 3-1 on a redirect of a McAvoy shot from the blue line at 12:30 shortly after the referees missed an apparent high-sticking penalty by Danton Heinen behind the net.

Boston led 30-14 in shots after two periods.

Pastrnak made it 4-1 with his league-leading 42nd goal, off a feed from Marchand with 6:57 to go.

Red Wings defenseman Trevor Daley sustained an upper-body injury and did not return after 8:28 of ice time.
